I can't believe Joel won't text me again to see if I'm in for a cup of tea, bringing one of his Waitrose bargains to make everything jolly. I always felt extremely uplifted after hearing him recount anecdotes and show us his latest wonderful annotated school exercise book holiday memoirs. He became my friend and took an interest in my family when we were having a very hard time and once given, that support remained and I found it invaluable. From emailing instructions as to how to re-pressurise the gas boiler, to letting Tabby stay in his house in Oxford for a week's work experience, he was as generous as he was entertaining. He gave me encouragement when I most needed it. It was a privilege to know him, thank you for everything, wonderful Joel.
