As many have said here, probably one of the finest storytellers we all had the pleasure to know. "Well, you see..." - if these words left Joel's mouth then you had better strap in because this story was going to be a good one.
Two things come to mind when I think of Joel. Firstly one of the all time greats which needs no further introduction or detail; the tale of the 'stolen' Citroen Picasso.
Secondly, during some time in Canada, following Joel's incredibly detailed recommendation of exactly what to order, where to sit, and how to generally soak up the atmosphere, I visited Schwartz's Deli in Montreal. When we next met I told him that; yes it was enjoyable, but at the end of the day "it was just a sandwich." Now Joel was a tolerant man, and deliberately exposed himself to many views in terms of faith, religion and politics. But the look on his face when I cack handedly dismissed Schwartz's in front of him was as if I had committed the most extreme blasphemy he had ever heard. "Just a sandwich!" he roared, in the voice that he reserved for the greatest of faux-outrage, but with a knowing twinkle in his eye as he knew he was pulling my leg. Still, I don't think he ever looked at me the same since!
To a kind, generous and much loved man, Joel you will be greatly missed.
