This is the story of how Joel and I met.. Seven years ago I was out for a walk, at lunchtime, in Toronto, where I live. It was a beautiful day and I walked from my office to a neighbourhood supermarket with the intention of buying lunch and bringing it back to my office to eat it. As I entered the store a woman asked me "Are you here for the lunch special." I answered, " I did not that there was a special", and she told me "There is one each weekday, and today's is very good..chicken and wedge fries." I ordered the special and because the price was right, I ordered a second one. I headed back to my office and paused at a busy intersection to wait for the traffic light to turn green. As I stood there I saw a man about 10 feet from me who looked like a combination of two of my dearest friends, one of whom had recently passed away. Moments later the man approached me and asked me, with a British accent, if I would take a few photos of him walking toward me a with beautiful tree in the background. I said "Yes" and he handed me a camera. I put down the bag containing the food and proceeded to take photos. When he was close to me I handed the camera back to him and asked his name, he said "Joel". I shuddered a little bit as my name is Joel and I had not many Joels before. He the asked me my name, and I responded "Joel". He then shuddered a little also. I then asked him a question I had never asked a person on the street, who I did not know, "What is your family name?" He answered "My name is Joel Ilson and at birth my name was Joel Ilovitch" I now did a major shudder, as my name at birth was also Joel Ilovitch. He then asked me my name, and I answered, "My name is Joel Simms and at birth my name was Joel Ilovitch." We both shuddered and realized his father was my uncle Eli, and my father was his uncle Simmy. We were first cousins who did not recognize each other because we did not know each other. I asked Joel if he was hungry, he said "Yes". I told him that I had just picked up two chicken and wedge fries lunches, said that my office was across the street and invited Joel to join me for lunch. He did, we talked for about two hours and began to know each other. The following morning Joel called and told me that he had contacted Anna to tell her about our amazing meeting and then sent me an email recounting some events that had led up to our meeting from his perspective. In the email he wrote that he had come to Toronto to visit a friend and that on the previous day he had gone out for a walk and seen a beautiful tree in a small park. He had paused and was looking for someone to ask to take photos of him with the tree in the background. He saw me and was thinking about giving his camera to me but after looking me over, I have long grey hair and a big beard, he was afraid that I might be a street person who would run off with his camera. He then remembered that he also had an inexpensive disposable camera, and decided to risk giving it to me.
